Meeting Notes 9/16/09

1. Ashland Cancelled: due to lack of interest we’ve cancelled the proposed Fall semester Ashland trip. We are planning on putting together a trip for Spring Break next semester. Keep an eye out for updates.

2. Book sale: We will be holding a book sale Oct 20, 21, and 22 from 10-2. We will need people to man the table during those hours. If you are available for any of the time slots please let me know. We also need books to sell, so please go through your bookcases and bring us what you (or your friends and family) are willing to part with.

Let’s Break Some Bread

August 31, 2009

Hello all! As you all (hopefully) know we are having our first Sigma Tau Meeting This Wednesday September 2nd.

We’d like to invite all members of Sigma Tau Delta and the Editing and Publishing Club to join us for dinner at the Madison Bear Garden at 6 (directly after the first meeting).

I hope you’ve all had an excellent first week back and I look forward to seeing you this Wednesday.

Cheers,
Caitlin

Welcome Back

August 20, 2009

Hello Folks,
It’s time to dust off your backpack, buy yourself a new notebook, and caffeinate yourself to a dangerous point.

Sigma Tau Delta meetings are officially scheduled for every other Wednesday at 5pm in Talr 107. The first meeting will be Sept. 2 so that you can focus on reminding yourselves to breathe for the first week. Happy fall semester and I’ll see you soon.

Cheers,
Caitlin Linscheid

So Long and Thanks for all the Fish!

June 3, 2009

Summer is upon us! Sigma Tau Delta will be inactive for a few months, but before we go I’d like to say that this has been a great year. Thank you to everyone who regularly attended our meetings, and everyone who attended our events.  I also wanted to  announce the officers for next semester:

President: Caitlin Linscheid

Vice President: Christina Files

Treasurer: Kathie Thompson

Secretary:  Marie Haggard

Keep an eye out for meeting dates. I’ll be sending out emails to figure out the best meeting times for everyone when we get closer to the fall semester. Once the schedule is set I’ll post it here.

In the meantime, get out a pair of sunglasses and crack open all those books you didn’t have time for during the semester.

Cheers,

Caitlin

Meeting Notes from March 4th, 2009

March 12, 2009

• We still have some totes left so if anyone can think of anyone they can sell them to let us know!
• The new order of shirts and club totes are here! You can pick them up at the meeting after Spring Break Wed. March 25th.
• Jeanne Clark has agreed to do our student faculty reading with Neesa Sonoquie. It’s going to be April 28th, location TBA.
• We’re going to have our book sale the last week of March, bring us any unwanted books! We’ll be setting up a collection box in Taylor 107.

Meeting Notes Feb. 18 2009

February 25, 2009

• Book sale postponed in hopes of better weather
• We’re trying to set up a Student Faculty Reading with someone from the creative writing faculty and a grad student. If any of you hear anything or know anyone who is working with a professor on a project and might be interested in presenting their work at the end of April let us know!
• Our initiation of the new members will happen at the end of the student faculty reading. Stay tuned for details.
• If you are new and want a t-shirt talk to Christina Files (the treasurer) and she’ll set it up.
• If you’re graduating this semester (or next semester) let us know by the end of March so we can order you a chord

Flyer: Sigma Tau Information — Spring 2009

February 22, 2009

If you missed the first meeting of the semester, we handed out Spring Information Flyers (PDF). If you don’t feel like printing out a PDF—pretty as it is—the information is reproduced for you below, it all it’s goodness:

Getting Connected

Upcoming Events

Movie Series. As part of the University Film Series, we are sponsoring the viewing of

The Color of Paradise
Tuesday, April 21 @ 7:30 p.m. in Ayers 106

Initiation. The new members need to be initiated, and we don’t know what to do! If you have any ideas, let us know. We don’t want to just tack it on to the tail-end of another event.

Odds and Ends

Graduation. If you would like to wear the Sigma Tau honor cords and/or sash, please let Michelle, Lisa, or Geoff know as soon as possible. They must be ordered directly from the head office, and the sooner we know how many to order, the better we can make sure they are here in time.

Booksale. Because last semester’s booksale went so well, we’d like to try to get another one going for this spring. Comb yours, your family’s, and your friends’ bookshelves for books to donate. Genre books sold really well, so don’t be afraid to pull out non-lit books. Money raised will fund end-of-year events, and books that don’t sell will be donated to Taylor 107 or traded to a used bookstore for books for 107. The booksale will probably be after spring break, and we will be looking for members to man the table.

Officer Elections. Most of the current officers are graduating this spring, and for Sigma Tau to continue on into the future, new members are asked to step up into a more active roll. If you are interested in an officer position next year, please talk to Michelle, Lisa, Christina, or Caitlin about what their duties entail. We would all be happy to talk about what Sigma Tau means to us, and how much work really goes into it.

Meeting Notes: 4 February 2009

February 5, 2009

Meetings are every other Wednesday at 5:00pm in Taylor 107. We have several events set up for this semester, so be sure to come to the meetings to keep on top of things.

We already have a date for our Spring Open Mic Night! It will be Friday Feb. 20th Has Beans @ 7:30. Come out and share your writing, someone else’s writing or show off some musical talent.

We will be hosting a movie night as part of the Humanities Film Series. We are set to host a showing of The Color of Paradise on Tues. April 21st @7:30pm in Ayers 106.

Booksale. Tentatively the week of Feb. 23rd: Tues., Wed., and Thurs. from 10:00am to 1:00pm. We are looking to see whether we can get a table in the BMU. If not, we will be in Taylor somewhere. We need people to sit (especially on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 to 1:45). Also, bring your books to the meeting on Wednesday so we can see how many we have.

Student Faculty Reading. This year we are hosting a Creative writing theme. We need to find out who’s doing what. If you have a class with Rob Davidson, Jeanne Clark, or any other creative writing teacher, ask them what they’re working on. We need to find someone soon.

Graduation. Let Michelle know if you need a chord or sash for graduation this semester.

Initiation. There are a lot of new members that have joined this last year, so we will be having our initiation ceremony either at the end of our student/faculty reading or as its own separate event. We aren’t sure yet.

Note: Internship Opportunity

January 25, 2009

I’m sure you all got this in your email, but just in case you missed it, there’s an internship opportunity that half our group should be jumping all over—Penguin is offering a summer internship for Sigma Tau members (hey, that’s us!), in exactly the field most of us are studying: publishing.

Better act fast, the deadline is in early February. Awesome opportunity, and I’d love for one of us to get it. I’m sure Casey would, too.

Sigma Tau Delta Summer 2009 Internship with Penguin Group (USA)

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  FEBRUARY 13, 2009

A paid summer internship opportunity is available from Penguin Group (USA) to provide an interested undergraduate student member of Sigma Tau Delta with experience in a variety of areas in publishing. Job responsibilities may involve editing, design, and marketing, among other possibilities. The Sigma Tau Delta/Penguin Group (USA) Summer Internship will run ten consecutive weeks beginning June 8th and ending August 14th. The recipient will work 28 hours per week and will be paid $7.25 an hour. The address is: 375 Hudson Street, New York, New York, 10014. The recipient of the internship will be responsible for securing and paying for housing as well as other expenses. Individual colleges and universities may arrange for academic credit for the internship but that must be worked out between the student and her/his university.

Each applicant must be prepared to accept the internship and its conditions if it is awarded to her/him. Failure to do so may jeopardize the continuation of the Penguin Group (USA) summer internship program for Sigma Tau Delta.

Interested undergraduate student members of Sigma Tau Delta must submit a current resume along with a two-three page letter addressing the applicant’s qualifications and interest in the field of publishing.

Submit materials by email attachment to sigmatd@niu.edu.
